The primary election in Greene County and across the state is slated for Tuesday, June 5. While absentee voters have been casting their ballots early via mail and at the auditor’s office, the polls will be open from 7 am to 9 pm at the following locations:
• Central Precinct: Clover Hall, fairgrounds, 601 E. Lincoln Way, Jefferson
• East Precinct: St. Brigid Parish Center, 602 Hager St East, Grand Junction
• Jefferson 1 Precinct: South assembly room, courthouse, 114 N. Chestnut St, Jefferson
• Jefferson 2 Precinct: Trinity Lutheran Church, 801 W. Lincoln Way, Jefferson
• Jefferson 3 Precinct: Greene County Community Center, 204 W. Harrison St, Jefferson
• North Precinct: Community Center, 410 Sand St, Churdan
• West Precinct: Community Room/City Hall, 900 Eagle St, Scranton
Voters must register as a Republican, Democrat or Libertarian to vote in the primary. Each party has a separate ballot. Click to see sample ballots. Click to see the legal notice of election.
There are no local contests in the county. On the Democratic ticket, Donna Lawson is seeking re-election as county treasurer while Marcia Tasler is running again for county recorder.
The Republican ballot has Dawn Rudolph and Tom Contner seeking re-election to their supervisor seats in District 2 and 3 respectively. Katlynn Gannon-Mechaelsen is a candidate for county treasurer.
The Libertarian Party ticket features Thomas Laehn for county attorney. He is serving as assistant county attorney at the current time. County attorney Nic Martino is not seeking re-election.
David Weaver is the Democratic candidate for state representative in District 47. There are three Republicans seeking that nomination: Donald J. Batt, Victoria Sinclair and Phil Thompson. Patrick Shaw is running for the seat on the Libertarian ballot. Incumbent Chip Baltimore is not seeking re-election.
In the Republican primary, Cyndi Hanson is challenging incumbent Congressman Steve King for the Fourth Congressional district seat.
Democrats will select one of three primary candidates to run in the November general election for the Fourth Congressional district seat. Leann Jacobsen, John Paschen and J.D. Scholten are on the ballot.
Five Republican candidates are on the ballot for state secretary of agriculture. Mike Naig was appointed when Jim Northey became under secretary for farm and foreign agricultural service in the US Department of Agriculture. Naig, Ray Gasser, Chad Ingels, Craig Lang and Dan Zumbach are on the primary ballot.
Tim Gannon is the Democrat seeking the ag secretary job.
Other races are not contested in the Republican primary: incumbents Gov Kim Reynolds, Secretary of State Paul D. Pate and Auditor of State Mary Mosiman.
There are six Democrats on the primary ballot for governor: Nate Boulton, Cathy Glasson, Fred Hubbell, Andrea Andy McGuire, John Norris and Ross Wilburn. Boulton announced last week that he was suspending his race.
On the Democratic primary ballot for secretary of state are Deidre DeJear and Jim Mowrer. Rob Sand is running for auditor of state. Incumbent treasurer of state Michael L. Fitzgerald is seeking re-election as is incumbent attorney general Tom Miller.
A pair of candidates for governor are on the Libertarian primary ballot: Marco Battaglia and Jake Porter.
Early/absentee voting can be done in the county auditor’s office through close of business Monday, June 4. Voters will be asked to provide identification to receive a ballot. Ballot requests can also be requested by mail but voters should be mindful of the time the mail service takes as the voting date draws near.
Voters at the polling place will also be required to provide an approved form of identification before they may receive and cast a ballot. Pre-registered voters who are unable to show approved ID may sign an oath of identification for an election held in 2018.
Voters who are not pre-registered or who have changed precincts also may be required to provide proof of residence. Any voter who cannot show ID may have their identity attested by another voter in the precinct who has proper ID.
